WEST
VILLAGE DUPLEX LOFT This penthouse, in an old warehouse building in
lower Greenwich Village, is owned by a poet and a philosophy professor who collect
20th century furniture. When they bought the space it was divided into a typical
three bedroom apartment with dry wall construction, dropped ceilings, partition
walls and a fractured living space. The challenge was to create an open, architecturally
sophisticated space that retained the best of the original features of the building
and took advantage of the spectacular views.
The apartment was rebuilt
around a central core of the kitchen, laundry and guest bathroom with the library,
guest bedroom and living room radiating out towards the windows. The library/guest
bedroom can be separated from the rest of the ground floor by a sliding curtain
wall. Discreet shades cut the glare and the heat of the sun on the 7' by 16' windows
and the cherry wood cabinetry and cork floors create warmth and comfort in this
large space wrapped in city views.
