BROOKLYN HOUSE

This Brooklyn brownstone was built in 1896 as one of a long row of similar four-story homes with full basements and gardens. When our client, a single professional woman in her early thirties, bought this building, it was in desperate need of renovation. Since she grew up in Los Angeles, she wanted to incorporate some of the elements she had grown to love in her previous homes such as an open, modern kitchen and easy access to the garden. Also, she has two playful and energetic dogs, so a special shower area for washing them was essential.

In the end, it was necessary to completely re-plumb and rebuild two bathrooms and the kitchen, re-plumb and to some extent replace the radiators, rewire the electrical system, and rebuild all the fireplaces and chimneys. In addition, we opened up the ground floor to make one giant Kitchen/Family Room, opened the wall to the Garden and installed a large pair of French doors, and rebuilt the patio area.

Many of the original elements of this turn of the century house are still evident. But now they have been happily married to an ultra modern Kitchen and sympathetically rebuilt fireplaces and bathrooms.
